A Virginia Tech student died Saturday from injuries suffered from a skateboarding accident that occurred on campus the previous Monday.

Freshman engineering major Gregory Weiner died at Carilion Roanoke Hospital five days after he had fallen off a skateboard.

Virginia Tech Police Department Assistant Chief Tom Foster told the Roanoke Times that Weiner was not wearing a helmet when he fell off a skateboard going down a hill on Aggie Quad Lane.

The Virginia Tech Police Department would not comment to the Collegiate Times.

Look for a memorial for Greg Weiner when the Collegiate Times comes back Jan. 20, 2009.

Posted by: Mark at Jan 22 Jason T - to answer your question why Greg was skating boarding at all; cause it is fun recreation just like you walk. This was an accident that doesn't need any judging except the fact Greg was not wearing a helmet. Without risk taking life would not be any fun. You should know this. Flag Abuse
Posted by: Jason T at Jan 17 No such thing here, Dww. Reductio ad absurdum involves reaching a logical contradiction, thus disproving one's premise. I understand what you meant, though, but it is not absurd to point out that people are allowed to make individual decisions regarding risk assessment. Flag Abuse
Posted by: Dww at Jan 9 It is a tragic death, to be learned from. Let us be cautious about a reductio ad absurdum defense of the tragic. Flag Abuse
Posted by: Jason T at Jan 9 Let's extend that, Fred. Why was he skateboarding at all? Why not walk? Why not walk with a helmet? Why leave the house at all? Everyone makes choices about risks they're willing to accept, and that's the beauty of it; these are personal decisions. I definitely understand your point, but the simple answer is that he chose not to. Flag Abuse
Posted by: Anonymous at Jan 9 I never see skateboarders wear helmets. Flag Abuse
Posted by: Fred at Jan 4 Why wasn't he wearing a helmet? Especially going downhill like that. That would seem like a common sense thing to do. Flag Abuse
