Concert lineup upsets some victim families

August 9th, 2007

In a little less than a month some of the biggest names in music will be taking the stage in a concert designed to promote healing among the Virginia Tech community. While the concert, which will include performances by  Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Phil Vassar and Nas,  has been put together to help the university community move forward in the aftermath of the tragedy at Virginia Tech, it  has instead caused outrage among several of the victim’s families.

Some parents of the victims of the April 16 shootings are pleading with organizers to reconsider the concert’s lineup after it was announced that Def Jam recording artist Nas is one of the four artists scheduled to appear.  The violent lyrics of some the rapper’s songs have been cause for concern among the victim’s families who maintain that the decision to include Nas in the lineup shows a lack of respect for victims of April 16.

Spokesman for the families, Vincent J. Bove, said  that the parent’s anger stems from the decision to include an artist whose music includes songs such as “Shoot ‘Em Up,”  found on Nas’ 1999 album Nastradamus. At least seven of the families have argued that the lyrics are inappropriate in light of the circumstances surrounding the show.

Nas' lyrics "are indicative of the moral decay in our society that contributes to acts of violence," Bove told The Washington Post. "For a university official to condone it or to be clueless of what this person's track record is, it's unconscionable beyond belief."

Despite the recent controversy, university officials maintain that the overall response to the concert has been positive and they have no plans to make any changes to the lineup.

"Literally within minutes of the concert's announcement, we received a tremendous positive response," said university spokesman Chris Clough.  "Among those who have responded have been families who thought it was a tremendously positive note to start the academic year."

concert (by Tom Cahill on 16th August) Being a parent of 2 former hokies, I find it unbelievable that the rap artist with violent lyrics will be allowed to perform so close to the date of the killings. I am very disappointed in the administration for not doing something. It will bring back horrific memoires to those who were there. It will be unbearable for those who have lost members of their families and lastly it is being covered by the media. The world is behind VT after the shootings. I'm now sure what people will think when this hits the news, and honestly, I don't blame them one bit.
NAS Performance (by Hugh Latimer on 16th August) Inviting NAS to the memorial concert make about as much sense as inviting Michael Vick to the Westminster Dog Show. How clueless can you get?
The lyrics are not that bad (by CC on 16th August) I do not listen to rap nor do I know who Nas is but when there seems to be controversy, I do take the time to find the facts for myself. I read many of his lyrics and they are not that bad. Mostly about his struggles in life. I am sure he has the decency and intellect not to sing any songs that may upset anyone in light of the recent tragedy. Remember, he volunteered to do this concert for free.
Stop moaning (by Lee Hawkins on 13th August) Lets face it, it has nothing to do with the artist or the song. Its the genre... ANY rap artist would have been argued against, but ALL rap artists have songs where guns are at least MENTIONED. Stop b****ing. You are quoting a song he wrote almost 10 YEARS AGO. Are you serious? If you feel that bad about it, just scratch EVERYONE and hire a bunch of gospel artists to perform.
Why not have NAS? (by Dion on 12th August) This concert is meant for the student body. I'm sure that students did not change the music styles they prefer because of the tragic events that happened. This concert is to lift the spirits of the students what better way then to have them share somethnig they all have in common.....Music.
Correct and Respect (by Puff Daddy on 11th August) My troop from season three of MTB will be passing through Blacksburg that Thursday night. Drop Nas so we may spetacularize you with hyperphenomenal smut. P.S. Guns n' Roses will be opening.
Unthinkable (by Mike on 10th August) It's unthinkable that VT would have this p.o.s. "artist" perform in light of what happened in April.
Concert (by Singing Hokie on 9th August) I really don't think that many of the families thought about the lyrics so much as the form of music. Like one other person said he(Nas) sticks out like a sore thumb in the line up but he really is a great addition. I personal can't stand John Mayer, but the style he sings has a better memorial feel to it. Nas is an exception artist and even though one of later songs talked about shooting the families ahve a real problem. Rap/Hip Hop does not have the best impression and I understand why but every artist is not putting out that crap. Would you prefer 50 Cent? Crime Mob? Guns and Roses? Poison? NO its just that the memorial concert is thought as a sacred event, and DMB, John Mayer fit that Ideal experience. Not so much ROCK or HIP HOP
Rap is bad, but there other bad choices too. (by Hokie Alumnus on 9th August) Perhaps Tech could have added further fuel to the fire by inviting Collective Soul to perform "Shine" or for that matter Pearl Jam and "Jeremy".
Nas (by Alan on 9th August) Nas can be a positive addition to the lineup, if you think about it. He's done some pretty good songs, as well as some that might portray him as promoting violence. It's pretty sad that the community has taken a closed-minded approach to the man.

However, I must add that he is certainly an addition that seems to stick out like a sore thumb.
Concert (by Nathan Foerster on 9th August) If there could be anyone to perform at this Concert from the Rap/Hip Hop community, Nas is an excellent choice. He is the quintessential rap lyricist and thinker of our time, and I'm sure will put on a very tasteful show. Not even being much of a fan of rap usually, i know some of his music and believe he brings a musical balance to this important Concert.
Concert (by Steve Lyles on 9th August) Nas has no reason to be here. Listen to their "music".
