Note: As part of the Collegiate Times’ coverage of Virginia Tech football, we’ll be breaking down the 2012 football roster every weekday until March 28 when the Hokies begin spring practice.

Height: 6-foot

Weight: 287 pounds

Position: Defensive tackle

2012 Year: Redshirt-freshman

High School: Warren Central H.S., Indianapolis, Ind.

An All-America selection by SuperPrep, Harley was one of Virginia Tech’s top recruits in last year’s class. He was a four-star prospect and rated the No. 24 defensive tackle in the country and the No. 3 overall player in Indiana. He was a member of the ESPNU 150 squad and has a host of other accolades that spell bright things for his future at Virginia Tech. In his final year at Warren Central High, he recorded 46 tackles with seven for a loss and six sacks and came to Tech looking to do more of the same.

Harley did make a notable effort last year in an attempt to make an immediate impact and see some playing time at his position, but was eventually redshirted.

This year, Harley should be able to secure himself a spot as the Hokies are losing Kwamaine Battle, Isaiah Hamlette, Courtney Prince and Dwight Tucker from the defensive line. Harley will join the Hopkins brothers along with Luther Maddy and Corey Marshall, making for an impressive showing at the defensive/nose tackle position.

Look for Harley’s role to increase as he steadily gains experience, cycling into the line for some valuable playing time this season.

VT Football: Antoine Hopkins done for season, and how the Hokies replace him

Earlier tonight, the Virginia Tech athletic department announced that starting defensive tackle Antoine Hopkins suffered a season ending torn ACL.

The news comes on the heels of the Hokies 23-3 drumming at the hands of the Clemson Tigers Saturday night, a game in which the Hokies failed to score a touchdown for the first time since 2006.

Hopkins, who is scheduled to have surgery Friday at Montgomery Regional Hospital, was having a terrific season through the first five games, recording five tackles.

Along with his younger brother Derrick, the defensive line for the Hokies has played admirably through five games, but the position has always been known to be one of the thinner areas on the team.

The No. 2 defensive tackles for the Hokies have been a pair of freshman in Corey Marshall and Luther Maddy, both of whom have played sparingly throughout the course of the season. With Hopkins down, juniors Isaiah Hamlette, Dwight Tucker, and freshman Kris Harley will likely get increased reps in practice leading up to this weeks game against the Miami Hurricanes.
