The secondary could not have played better against Duke in the 13-10 loss on Saturday.
Going into the game, the team faced an unexpected problem; both Kyle Fuller and Brandon Facyson managed to get injured on a bye week. Kyle Fuller pulled his groin and Facyson was concussed. Luckily, Antone Exum was ready to return.
Just the week before, defensive backs coach Torrian Gray was worried about having too many outstanding corners, and then all of a sudden he was down to two – a true freshman and one player returning from an ACL tear.
However, both Kendall Fuller and Exum put on outstanding performances.
The secondary held the Blue Devils to 107 passing yards. Duke quarterback AJ Boone went 7-24 and threw four interceptions.
Surprisingly, the Blue Devils targeted Kendall all game and only threw to Exum once.
Kendall had an outstanding performance, recording three solo tackles, three interceptions and a pass breakup. His three interceptions is Tech’s record for interceptions in a game by a freshman. They also bring him to five on the year, which makes him tied for the most in the country.
The ACC even gave Kendall co-defensive back of the week.
Exum had a rather uneventful return game. He was only targeted once and had one tackle.
Chuck Clark got a good bit of playing time due to the injuries. He was able to get three tackles.
He was targeted twice and once missed a tackle he should have made, but had good coverage the rest of the time.
Safeties Detrick Bonner and Kyshoen Jarrett both played well, but had unimpressive stats. Bonner had two tackles and one breakup, while Jarrett recorded one tackle.
The bench for the secondary will be deeper this weekend when Kyle and Facyson return. It will be interesting to see who ends up getting the most playing time between the Fullers, Facyson and Exum.
The team really could not have asked more from the secondary this week; it is disappointing the rest of the team cannot play as well as them.
