Aromire (pronounced uh-RO-muh-ray) is a true sophomore from the Washington, D.C. area, and should play a large role on defense for the Hokies.
He was highly touted as a high schooler, as he was named a SuperPrep All-American while attending Woodson.
Aromire posted a stellar senior season, racking up 66 tackles, four interceptions and eight pass break ups. He also returned three kickoffs and two punts for scores.
In January 2011, he began practicing with the team at cornerback, but he was quickly switched to rover, and finished spring practice at the position.
He began to impress coaches with his striking physical talents, as he recorded a 35-inch vertical jump and ran a 4.49 40-yard dash.
Despite his status as a true freshman, Aromire was still able to see some action last season, and was one of just seven true freshmen to see the field over the course of the year.
He played in 10 of the team’s games, but mostly spent time on special teams. His limited action on defense came in the latter half of the Appalachian State game and in the Sugar Bowl against Michigan.
Although Aromire is relatively inexperienced, he will play a major role on defense for the Hokies this year due to uncertainty in the secondary after cornerback James Farrow’s departure.
Although Antone Exum was originally slated to return as the starting free safety for the team, coaches have recently decided to move him to cornerback, creating uncertainty at the position.
Detrick Bonner and Kyshoen Jarrett are expected to start at safety for the team, but their inexperience means that Aromire will definitely be in the mix at rover over the course of spring practice.
His performance over the next couple months will undoubtedly determine how much of a role he plays on the team, but it would seem that he will see significant time on the field no matter how spring goes.
