You’ve probably already seen it, but in case you haven’t, here’s a clip of Shane Beamer and David Wilson during the ECU game.

Beamer, who is a former Hokies player himself, said he got caught up in the moment and decided to go with the headbutt on Wilson. The headset went flying, Wilson gives a little nod and Beamer continues yelling encouragement.

“We were struggling at the time, and I just kind of picked David up and was looking at him right in the eyes,” Beamer said. “I was fired up, he was fired up. It just kind of seemed like the thing to do I guess.”

While it may have helped Wilson and the Hokies leave Greenville with a 17-10 win, Beamer said he is still paying for the hit.

“I’m still recovering,” he said. “It’s still sore, but my nose is the worst thing. The hit wasn’t too bad, but I think I jacked up my nose somehow, so it’s still tender. That was a spur of the moment deal, I got caught up.”

Beamer, the running backs coach, doesn’t think his dad has done any headbutting during his career as a head coach.

“I’m sure he did when he was a player, but never without a helmet on,” Beamer said. “I’m a competitor, I love Virginia Tech football, and I think all of us coaches would give anything to be able to still play. I guess that was my way to be close to the action I guess. Still hurting, though.”
