I can definitely remember where I was during the tragedy. I was in my 7th period precalc class when I started getting constant text messages about the shootings.. I had sent in my deposit to secure my spot at Tech that morning. I was being taunted by fellow students about the college that I was going to, hearing students tell me to buy a bulletproof vest before I go.

But honestly, as a proud VT Alumni, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I’m a proud HOKIE for life.

This happened during the 2006-2007 school year. The first day of classes that year, the school was on lock down because of the Morva shooting.

There used to be a Mrs. Smith that lived on Craig Creek road. She was a widow and I used to help her with yard work. From what I recall she had a son who used to live in the area ( I think his name was James) that used to show up in the sex offender registry. I’ve always wondered if there could be a link. By now Mrs. Smuth has likely passed and her son no longer shows up in the registry.

So if the authorities have DNA evidence and have taken so long to reveal this fact, I speculate the authorities compared the sample against the convicted felon DNA database in Richmond and didn’t get a match. Thus they are looking among local residents to see if they can voluntarily get samples. I suspect the killer is long gone from the area.

As the brother of another unsolved murder victim in Virginia , I urge Blacksburg area residents to please step forward with any information you may have, no matter how small. Someone knows who killed Heidi Childs and David Metzler, or something about the vehicles nearby that evening, the rifle used, or other details. Please help these families out with any information you can provide to law enforcement.

Balloon releases are illegal in the state of Virginia because they are so dangerous to wildlife. Those organizing this event should have checked into that first.
