Johns Hopkins student kills intruder with samurai sword

Some bizarre news off of a college campus today: The Associated Press reports, as seen here on the Richmond Times-Dispatch Web site, that a Johns Hopkins University student armed with a samurai sword, killed a man who broke into his garage.

The intruder died at the scene, and the local authorities are not releasing any names.

Police did say the student cut off the intruder’s hand and caused a severe laceration to the upper body. Zc

Peace Corps reaches out to students Wednesday

Students interested in applying to work with the Peace Corps will have an opportunity to hear from recruiter Alex Frane during an information session on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 7pm in Squires 147.

7,846 Peace Corps volunteers, who have 27-month commitments to the organization, are currently serving in 76 countries.

Maroon 5 coming to Burruss

Virginia Tech Union, the Student Government Association and Hillel will present rock band Maroon 5 on Nov. 10 in Burruss Auditorium.

An e-mail with announcements from student organizations said tickets would cost $30 for Virginia Tech students. Public tickets will cost $40 tickets, with both going up by $5 on the day of the concerts. Tickets will be sold through UUSA.

The show will be at 7:30 p.m.

No announcement has been made as to the day the tickets will go on sale. Zc

AT&T officially launches 3G in Blacksburg

Smart phones such as the iPhone 3G will now be capable of more advanced features around the Virginia Tech campus and New River Valley area.

AT&T launched 3G service for the area this weekend, and officially announced the launch this morning. The expansion to Blacksburg follows expansion of 3G service in Charlottesville and Hampton Roads.

Fullback Kenny Jefferson suspended, is charged with DWI

Virginia Tech’s football team announced projected starter Kenny Jefferson has been suspended for violating team rules, and Montgomery County Court Records show he has been charged with driving while intoxicated.

Jefferson was arrested Aug. 16 in Christiansburg and arraigned on Aug. 28.

He is due in court on Oct. 14 for a disposition. It is Jefferson’s first DWI charge.

Jefferson is a redshirt senior. Zc
