The first month of the new year is known for many things—new resolutions, a new semester, and the premiere of “American Idol.” Even with the switch-up of judges over the last few years, “Idol” continues to dominate Wednesday and Thursday nights. This year’s Idol premiere raked in an impressive 21.9 million viewers. That’s not hard to believe, as many viewers will agree that the beginning of the season is the juiciest.

“Idol” always kicks off the season with the hilarious yet gut-wrenching audition rounds. It is during this round of the show that the contestants first showcase their talent – or lack thereof. Viewers often feel conflicted during these episodes as to whether they should feel bad for the awful contestants or not. On the one hand, it seems many of these untalented singers legitimately did not know they sound like nails down a chalkboard.  But on the other hand, it is their fault for going on national television. And really – how could they not know?

This season has kept the tradition alive, showcasing a plethora of horrendous “talents” amongst the hidden gems. While the bad auditions are highly entertaining, the show also pulls on viewers’ heartstrings with the sad stories of some contestants. Last week, “Idol” featured Ramiro Garcia, a contestant who was born without ears. Despite the prognosis of never being able to hear or speak, Garcia underwent numerous surgeries to obtain an ear canal. After his rendition of “Amazing Grace,” the judges decided to send him to Hollywood.

Although many die-hard “Idol” fans may disagree, many think that the addition of Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez has brought new life to the aging show. Tyler and Lopez have a love/hate relationship much like Paula and Simon did. However, Lopez is not taking over the role of Paula. She is a much stronger figure and a lot less ditzy. Also notably, Randy has stepped up and become much harsher in his judgments since Simon’s departure. As for Tyler, he adds a whole new level of hilarity and wackiness to the show.

This week is the last of the audition rounds. Tonight’s episode features “Idol’s” visit to Portland, Ore. while tomorrow night the crew will visit St. Louis, Mo. Although the end of the audition round is in sight, the show is just beginning. Prepare for the incredibly dramatic and tear-filled events of the Hollywood round next week.
